Kaaviya Thalaivan music review

Movie: Kaaviya Thalaivan

Cast: Siddharth,Prithviraj,Vedhika

Director: G.Vasantabalan

Music director: A.R.Rahman

Here is the music review of one of the most awaited albums of the year, composed by the Mozart of Madras.

1.Vaanga Makka Vaanga-Haricharan,Dr.Narayanan

The album kick starts with a street play type of song that brings out the true soul of traditional dramas. Haricharan's tell tale voice modulation works out well over here. The usage of classical instruments serves as an icing on top of the cake. Only A.R.Rahman knows how to compose such innovative tunes!

2.Aye Mr.Minor!-Haricharan,Shashaa Tirupati

A.R.Rahman does another "Hello Mister Edhirkatchi" number. With a foot tapping construction, this song takes us to the rock n roll era of the 70s and 80s. The mandolin in the interlude deserves a special mention here. A groovy duet that is sure to hook you on instantly. Haricharan weaves magic with his voice and Shashaa brings out the seductive mood of the song. One of the highlights of the album!

3.Yaarumilla-Shweta Mohan,Srinivas

And here comes the Rahmanish melody that is breezy and soul stirring. Shweta's honey dipping voice brings out the vintage feeling of this evergreen gem. The song can be played repeatedly just to listen to her voice. And of course, how can I forget the awesome instrumentation in the second interlude? It's Rahman at his best once again! With beautiful lyrics, this song would stay on the charts for a long time.

4.Sandi Kuthirai-Haricharan

Haricharan gets a hat-trick with this quirky composition. It's a comical song which is on the lines of "Vishwanathan velai venum" type of songs. A.R.Rahman makes the best use of trumpet, mouth organ and xylophone in a funny way. The occasional laughter sounds peps up the fun quotient of the song. This number can remain as one of those classic jazz numbers that ruled during the 70s.

5.Sollividu Sollividu-Mukesh

It's a situational number that sets up the mood on a battle field. Mukesh enthralls us with his powerful rendition. The lyrics speak about war and it's consequences. It's like listening to a part of Mahabharatha in the form of a song. Partially sounding like a devotional number, this epic track stands out in the entire album.

6.Thiruppugazh-Vani Jayaram

A.R.Rahman ropes in the evergreen vocalist Vani Jayaram to croon this spiritual number. She just captures us with her sweet voice which is as fresh as ever. This track leaves us wanting for more as it is a short one!

7.Alli Arjuna-Haricharan,Bela Shende

When was the last time you have heard a 10 minute long song? Maybe way back in the 70s or 80s. But only A.R.Rahman can recreate such magic of long songs. This number is a montage song which consists of eight bit sections. And each section has a beauty of it's own. Well, it's Haricharan who yields the megaphone yet again with ease. Bela Shende's soulful rendering makes this track even more beautiful.

Verdict:

Well, it's A.R.Rahman and what else can you expect? This soundtrack is no exception. With all it's grandeur, this album is sure to stay as one of Rahman's classical gems. There is no doubt that he is the God of Music. He is versatile and he proves it yet again.

Amara Kaaviyam music review

Movie: Amara Kaaviyam

Cast: Sathya,Mia George

Director: Jeeva Shankar

Music director: M.Ghibran

1.Saridhaana Saridhaana-Yazin Nizar,Thomas Andrews,M.Ghibran

The soundtrack kickstarts with a groovy number which speaks about the confusions faced by a teenager. The fast paced track is endearing with it's touch of melody at places. The nadaswaram loops in the interlude are an added advantage. But the song takes time to grow on you. Yazin Nizar blows you away with his singing. He is the perfect choice for this song. A good beginning by Ghibran!

2.Edhedho Ennamvandhu-Haricharan,Padmalatha

Up next is a beautiful melody rendered flawlessly in the sweet voices of Haricharan and Padmalatha. The orchestration is a perfect blend of classical and modern instruments. The entire song oozes with melody and makes for a wonderful love ballad. The background change in the second interlude takes this song to a fantasy world. An abundant amount of Sufi touch works in the favor of the number. Sweet and cute on the whole!

3.Mounam Pesum-K.S.Chitra,Sowmya Mahadevan

Ghibran ropes in the legendary singer Chitra to croon this number. And what we get to listen is a perfect hi-five melody that is sure to be termed as a classic in this album. Beginning with mellowed piano notes, the song moves in a complete trance with Chitra's whispery modulations. Ghibran deserves a special applause for his interlude arrangements as they make the number even more ecstatic. Sowmya Mahadevan stands out with her lines eventhough she may have less rendition space.

4.Dheva Dhevadhai-K.G.Ranjith,Madhu Iyer

Ghibran does not run out of melodies I think so as he composes a masterpiece duet with this number which is instantly likeable. And of course, here also the orchestration and the interlude arrangement stand out. A mysterious haunting string of melody flows through the entire song. K.G.Ranjith makes a strong comeback with his lilting voice and Madhu Iyer complements him well with her effervescent singing. Highlight of the album!

5.Dhagam Theera-Padmalatha,Yazin Nizar

Here comes a dreamy number that is perfect for a girl who has fallen head over heels in love with her man. With it's exotic arrangements, the song has been composed in Amruthavarshini raga which is considered to bring showers of rain. Of course, this number can be heard on a beautiful rainy evening. Padmalatha showcases her unique skills with this number accompanied by Yazin Nizar who weaves magic with the 'Vasagi vasagi' line.

6.Edhedho Ennamvandhu (Solo)-Sundar Narayan Rao

Ghibran's favorite Sundar Narayan Rao croons the second version of the melodious number. Though his singing sounds to be forced, he turns out to be the perfect choice as he can carry off the Sufi influence with ease. Makes for a good listen!

Verdict:

M.Ghibran proves his mettle once again after his outstanding Thirumanam Ennum Nikkah. His melodies are timeless and remind us of the bygone era of good music. He is the perfect descendant for the legend A.R.Rahman as his compositions have that magical touch of ARR.

Ek Villain music review

Movie: Ek Villain

Cast: Siddharth Malhotra,Shraddha Kapoor,Riteish Deshmukh

Director: Mohit Suri

Music director: Mithoon,Ankit Tiwari and Soch(Band)

 1.Galliyan-Ankit Tiwari

Ankit Tiwari comes up with a spellbinding melody-rock with this number. Right from the beginning, the song keeps you hooked on in a trance. The brilliantly constructed tune makes you forget that it is a sad song. Though Ankit has composed this track on the lines of Sun raha hai na, it has it's unique style. The flute and violin interludes adds much more melody to the already melodious number. Manoj Muntashir's love filled lyrics deserves a special mention. A chartbuster!

2.Banjaara-Mohammed Irfan

This track has Mithoon's stamp all over it. A lilting melody with a slight Sufi touch makes this number worth listening on repeat mode. The true soul of the song lies in Mohammed Irfan's flawless rendition. His magnificent voice leaves you wanting for more. One of the finest tracks of this year.

3.Zaroorat-Mustafa Zahid

Though this is an underrated track, it has turned out to be my personal favorite. It's a fast paced heartbreak song that has an overall pop-ish feeling to it. As for Mustafa Zahid's singing, he does complete justice to this number. He carries off the magic which he left behind with Bhula dena. This song is to be liked only by a few listeners. But I say, it's a Once in a blue moon track.

4.Awari-Adnan Dhool,Momina Mustehsan

Here comes an innovative composition that will grow on you after a few listens. This experimental track has an ethereal touch with it's background sounds. The electronica flushes in the interlude is something new to listen for. Momina's voice is dark and rustic, adding spice to this number. Adnan Dhool complements her well. What I liked about this number is that it sounds much like an ARR track. Magical!

5.Humdard-Arijit Singh

Arijit Singh! That one word is enough to say that this number is a melody. Though the tune is a plain average one, Arijit turns out to be the saving factor. This is probably the weakest track of the album. But overall it's listenable and it can even make it to the charts due to its simplicity.

6.Galliyan (Unplugged)-Ankit Tiwari,Shraddha Kapoor

Wow! I never knew that Shraddha Kapoor could sing with such an elegance. She has got an earthy and natural voice which adds beauty to the already popular number. Nowadays, most of the unplugged versions of popular numbers don't live up to the original ones. But Ankit Tiwari tactfully handles this melody balancing it with minimal guitar strums.

Verdict:

Ek Villain is a promising soundtrack and I am sure that it will capture many hearts like it did to me. It's going to be placed in Top ten albums of this year.

Kochadaiyaan music review

Movie: Kochadaiyaan

Cast: Rajinikanth,Deepika Padukone

Director: Soundarya Rajinikanth

Music director: A.R.Rahman

 1.Enge Pogudho Vaanam-S.P.Balasubrahmanyam

The album of Kochadaiyaan begins with this majestic track. With all its grandeur in the evergreen voice S.P.Balasubrahmanyam, this one is a chartbuster. The orchestration is picture perfect with different instruments used at their best. The entire track sketches the valor of a warrior with its exhilarating lyrics by Vairamuthu. The chorus at the background adds more majesty to the song. Its a tailor-made track for Superstar Rajinikanth!!!

2.Medhuvagathan-S.P.Balasubrahmanyam,Sadhana Sargam

After a magnificient track, its time to relax to a soft romantic duet. Beginning with Sadhana Sargam's sweet voice against polite background, this number gains momentum with gentle drum beats. This mesmerizing melody is perfect for a beautiful lovey-dovey evening. Once again, S.P.B weaves magic with his voice complementing Sadhana in each line. The number has the stamp of Rahman's 90s compositions. Flute at the prelude and interludes deserve a special mention while the breezy chorus at the intervals are pleasant to the ears.

3.Maattram Ondrudhaan-Rajinikanth,Haricharan,Umashankar

Well, all Rajinikanth lovers, please tune in to this track. The dialogues delivered by Rajinikanth have always been popular universally. And there are lots of them in this wonderful number!!! ARR has composed a lovely song which goes simultaneously along with the dialogues. Sung flawlessly by Haricharan, it has awesome lyrics by Vairamuthu. The jathi at the end by Umashankar is rendered in a zestful manner. Finally, this track ends up as a treat to all Rajini fans.

4.Manapennin Sathiyam-Latha Rajinikanth

Its a beautiful classically inclined number which talks about a bride's promises to her to-be husband. The song moves in a slow rhythmic pace with Latha Rajinikanth's innocent yet elegant voice. The lyrics deserve an applause here. Vairamuthu has penned the lines so wonderfully that it makes the track lyrically rich. The Nadaswaram at the interlude serves as an icing on the cake.

5.Idhayam-Chinmayi,Srinivas

A haunting semi classical number that is sure to make waves in the music industry. The complexity of the track is presented by Chinmayi with ease. The way she moulds the line "Nazhuvi nazhuvi.." is fantastic. She would surely win accolades for crooning this challenging number. Srinivas proves his mettle with his powerful and engaging vocals. Rahman has pushed the envelope with this particular composition in terms of melody infused with Carnatic traces. Pick of the album!!!

6.Engal Kochadaiyaan-Kochadaiyaan Ensemble

This is a fast paced battlefield number. Traditional instruments are used in this energetic number which speaks about the hero's bravery. Though this particular song is two notches lower than other compositions, it manages to survive due to the rendition of Kochadaiyaan Ensemble. Hope the visuals will take this track to higher levels.

7.Manamaganin Sathiyam-Haricharan

Once again the Manapenin Sathiyam number returns in another lilting version. It is mellifluous with Haricharan's honey-dipping voice. This version too is lyrically rich in which the groom speaks about his promises to his to-be wife. The number sounds raw and it has that magical touch of ARR.

8.Rana's Dream-London's Session Orchestra

Its an instrumental track that has all the elements to create a perfect atmosphere for the movie. The combination of flute, strings, viola and other instruments defines the grandeur of the track. The London Orchestra has done a splendid job in composing this one.

9.Karma Veeran-A.R.Rahman,A.R.Raihanah

Yet another energetic track and this time it all gets even more magnificient due to the sister-brother duo's rendition. Raihanah's voice is enthralling and she sounds like a grand opera singer with the beginning lines. She should croon more songs in the film industry as she has got an awesome voice. Rahman joins his sister with his effervescent voice that is soulful as always. This royal number serves as the ideal ending for the soundtrack!!

Verdict:

ARR proves that he is indeed the Music God of India with this glorious soundtrack. Yet another chartbuster!!!
